West Bengal is the eastern bottleneck of India. It stretches from the Bay of Bengal lying southwards to the Himalayas lying northwards.

This state covers the area of about eighty-eight thousand seven hundred and fifty-two square kilometers (88,752 sq km).

The capital of West Bengal is also known as the City of Joy or Kolkata.

Kanchenjunga Mountain

Located partly in Nepal and Sikkim is one of the interesting places to visit while the tourists are here to visit West Bengal. This is known to be the world’s third highest mountain. The exact location of this place is Taplejung District, Mechi Zone, Nepal; Sikkim, India.

 This mountain range has an elevation of about eight thousand five hundred and eighty-six meters (8,586 m). A tourist should visit Kanchenjunga because it has a marvelous view. In the early morning while sunrise the peak reflects the sun rays and a golden tinge is seen all over the mountain body and it feels like you are in a serene place. This is one of the best West Bengal sightseeing.

Himalayan Mountaineering Institute

Himalayan Mountaineering Institute is one of the famous West Bengal sightseeing where tourists spend their time knowing and gaining inquisitive information about the history of mountain climbing. This is situated in the body of The Himalayas. The view from this institute is worth watching.

I would suggest that one who is a mountain enthusiast or has experienced mountain climbing, must visit this place for better skills and knowledge. This is a very well designed place which attracts the visitors. This is also a good museum for those who are interested in first mountaineers and Sherpas that conquered the huge Himalayan Range.

Batasia Loop

The next place in West Bengal sightseeing is Batasia Loop is the famous spiral railway that has been created to lower slope of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway in the district of Darjeeling, West Bengal. At this particular point, one can see the railway track moving around in spirals through a tunnel, over the hilltop.

 This place is five kilometers (5km) from Darjeeling, below Ghum (a place in Darjeeling). A memorial for the Gorkha soldiers belonging to the Indian Army is also built there, who sacrificed their lives for the Independence of India in 1947.   There is also a panoramic garden in the close proximity of Batasia Loop.

 Tiger Hill

Tiger Hill is the place located in Darjeeling and is a very attractive tourist spot in Darjeeling. This place can be termed as the best place to watch the Sunrise. This is a place in Upper Darjeeling, which shows the rejuvenating and mesmerizing sunrise.

The sun rays are so warm that it is a perfect view to watch it with a combo of a cup of coffee. This perfectly blends with the experience! This place has a freezing cold temperature and weather conditions at the time of sunrise.

Hazarduari Palace Museum

 This is a historical place and is the top most attractive place in Murshidabad, West Bengal. This is also one of the most architectural attractions that West Bengal owns. This is a finely built architecture at the British Raj in the period of Mughals.

This place is named “Hazarduari” which means a thousand doors because it has a 1000 doors in it. This museum has a stock of enormous artifacts and paintings. This is a place for a person who has high interest in facts related to History.

Jorasanko Thakur Bari

Jorasanko Thakur Bari is located in the north of West Bengal and this is the ancestral home of the Tagore family. This is currently located in the Rabindra Bharti University campus. It is the house in which the poet and the non-European Nobel laureate, Rabindranath Tagore was born. This is the place where the Legendary poet has spent most of his childhood.

This is one of the popular heritage and West Bengal sightseeing. Every inch of the walls of this “Bari” has the touch of Tagore’s poetry. This place beholds the history of Rabindranath Tagore and his ancestors. This is the place where one can peek into in order to get the essence of Bengali poetry.

Grand Canyon of West Bengal

Grand Canyon of West Bengal, that is in Gongoni. Located in the small town of Garbeta, this fascinating wide gorge of red soil stand on the banks of river Silabati. This is a place where one can get to see the Grand Canyon.

Dalmadal Kaman Canon

Dalmadal Kaman Canon Canon is a place located in Bishnupur where the Dalmadal Kaman of Mallaraj’s is kept. The remnants of the canon are kept under a tree.  This is the original canon which is put under the tree for the tourists to visit.

This is situated nearby to the Chinnamasta Temple which is also an attraction for the tourists visiting Bishnupur. Dalmadal Canon is wrought out of iron and is one of the largest canons. Dalmadal Kaman Canon is one of the famous West Bengal sightseeings.

Gate of Old Fort

Also known as Garhdarja, is a famous and attractive tourist spot in Bishnupur. This is located near the Mrinmoyee Mandir in Bishnupur. In this place terracotta jewelry and status are available. During Mallabhum times, this was one of the gates for entry to the fort.

This fine arched gateway is popularly known as “Pathar Darwaja” which is built with dresses laterite blocks. This was the northern entrance to the ancient fort of Binshnupur. The Malla King, Bir Singha has built it in the second half of the seventeenth century.

Sunderbans National Park

The Sunderbans is a homeland for a variety of reptiles. The Sunderbans National Park contains many species of snake, like the sea snakes, king cobras, dog-faced snakes, Russell’s viper, Indian python, green vine snakes, rat snakes etc. Turtles can be found even that include olive ridley turtles, green turtles, peacock soft-shelled turtles, Indian Flap-shelled turtles, hawksbill turtles etc. Some other reptiles are monitor lizards, chameleons, house geckos, checkered keelback, estuarine crocodiles, Asian water monitors, yellow monitor lizards etc.

Best time to visit West Bengal

The best time to visit this state is from October to March. Winter is ideally between November and February, with January being the coldest month. During these months, one can experience the most pleasurable weather. A cool wind blows throughout the day during these months and the Sun also shines brightly.

 During this time all the tourist attractions can be enjoyed. Summer is not a good option to visit West Bengal because during the summer months this state experiences loo and a weather of oppressive heat, which can cause health problems to the tourists coming from chilled areas. For them, summer is not the ideal time, because they will not be able to adjust to the climatic conditions.

How to reach West Bengal

By Air:

West Bengal can be reached by air easily.West Bengal has got two airports. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport is located in Calcutta and Bagdogra airport is a domestic airport in Bagdogra city. Regular flights not only operate from the various cities of India but also from the various parts of the world to Bengal and vice-versa. Tourists can reach their destinations from the airport by further boarding buses or taxis.

By Rail:

West Bengal is also well-known for its railway connectivity with different parts of the countries. There are Rajdhani trains operating from all over the country to West Bengal. There are many stations which are very active receivers of trains from outside the state and hence, reaching West Bengal by train from any other state is no more difficult.

By Road:

The network by the road that connects West Bengal to the other parts of India is quite extensive. The state is well connected to the other parts of India through the National Highways and State Highways. West Bengal can also be reached easily by the neighboring states like Odisha, Jharkhand, and Bihar.
